If You Love Other Countries, You Hate America

Lovely letter to the editor in today's Newsday. (Scroll down a bit, and the link is likely to work only through today...)

Here's the text of the letter:

Some flags fly better at home

I find it very disconcerting that, instead of flying the American flag, some people on Long Island are driving around with the flags of other countries on their vehicles. The United States of America feeds, clothes, educates and provides health care to these immigrants. If they have so much allegiance to their home country, why are they in the United States? It is a slap in the face of all hard-working citizens to see this blatant display of anti- Americanism.

Margaret Weber

Ms. Weber, why have you come to my planet?

When you make 50,00 a year and a homeless man comes up to you and asks you for change, you probably give him a dolar, maybe two. That is essentially how much money our country takes out its pockets to help other countries. On top of that, most of our aid goes to corporations with US interest in those countries. So, America is not the most charitable ( I think its 22nd of the top 22 developed countries in giving Aid; email me for the information).
On top of that, flag-holding is really a phenomenon of few western countries. If you go to other countries, you wil rarely see people with flags hanging next to their house. Americans just perceive other countries' citizens walk around proudly with a flag over their neck; you will se its rarely the case. Usually the flag is representative more of a family culture that is maybe surrounded by a heterogeneous mix of people (aka an Italian flag in an all african-American neighborhood). Your country has done bad things, and if you keep ignoring it, you world will crumble when you find out the truth of your country's atrocious history. Look for the truth and stop hiding in your great American life. I love America, but people here are very ignorant of what occurs in the world.

It's ok to sport your flag of heritage. This countries wouldn't be what it is if we didn't have immagrants. Just don't go doing what the illegal ones did marching around and interrupting our daily lives screaming for green cards with a Mexican flag as big as star jones and an American flag a size of an IPOD.
