Are You Down With The King?

Seth Stevenson has a cool article on Burger King's latest ad efforts. I like the work. I also like the "Angus Diet" thing, which I thought was a great spoof that will resonate well with BK's young target.

For the record, I hated Subservient Chicken because I thought it didn't do enough to associate the viral marketing effort with BK. I think it was a piece done for its own sake.

A little high on the creep-o-meter to me. The King reminds me of the fake, elf-made, Santa in the movie "Santa Clause" with Tim Allen. The psuedo-santa was the bad guy of course, like all things fake. Herein lies the rub, not being genuine this symbol portrays BK and therefore it's product (food) as the imitation...leaving McDonalds to assume the role of the "real thing". My gut is, long-term it's a bad branding device; short term it will not lead to a huge jump in sales.
