Three times in the past few days I've received a phone call on my mobile from 866-463-3017. Each time, when I've answered the call, the caller hung up. I've dialed the number back, only to be told by a recording that Sprint ("together with Nextel" lest we forget) wanted to share some information with me concerning phone plans. The message then gives instructions for how to remove my number from their call list. I've followed the directions all three times and have been told that my number has been added to Sprint's Do Not Call list. Seems they don't check it before they call out to me.
I just switched from Sprint. I already hate them. This harassment gives me yet another reason.
Hopefully, bloggers will start posting this phone number all over the place and the blogosphere will jam their call center. (One can hope, right?)
Posted by THespos at June 6, 2006 05:49 PM | TrackBacktom, is it just that Sprint sucks or that all celluar services to some degreeor another stink?
Posted by: brian at June 7, 2006 03:08 PMMost of them are pretty horrible. I've tried all of the majors, save for Cingular, and probably had the best experience with Verizon.
But I don't care what industry you're in...If someone tells you not to call them three times in as many days and you still call back, you suck. Plain and simple.
I received my fourth call from Sprint this morning. This time, after hearing the 10 seconds of dead air that auto-dialers tend to produce, I got someone on the phone. Well, he was on the phone long enough to hear me yell at him that he was never to call my number again.
DNC legislation loopholes allow companies that have a relationship with me to call me, but I haven't had a relationship with Spring since switching over to T-Mobile a while back. How long before what Sprint's doing is considered a DNC violation? I'd argue it's a DNC violation now, but I suspect they'd be able to wriggle out of the fine.
Posted by: Tom Hespos at June 7, 2006 03:18 PMI got this same number on my cell last night, but did not hear the phone ringing so I didn't answer it. I googled the number this morning and came up with your blog. I have been furious with Sprint before - reading sprintrants didn't do anything for my good mood this morning. 'specially before at least one cup of coffee. Grrrr. I will post it on my xanga - can I link to your blog? Thanks -
Dianne
Hi Dianne:
Sorry you're a victim of this, too. Link away - maybe more folks will see this and voice their dissatisfaction with Sprint.
Posted by: Tom Hespos at June 8, 2006 09:40 AMyep-- I googled the 866 number and found your blog too. I've been concerned at having missed the call (the ringer was off every time they tried) but now I'm rather p**ved. Thanks for the post.
Posted by: chris at June 8, 2006 05:35 PMI found your blog the same way someone else did. I got a "missed call" alert on my phone and googled the number. I'm a current Sprint customer, but my contract expired. Next time I see the number on caller ID, I will answer it and will tell them that if they call me again, not only will I NOT renew but their CALLING will CAUSE me to switch to another carrier.
I'm going to check into switching to Working Assets' wireless service. At least then part of the money I shell out will get donated to progressive causes. BTW, Working Assets has said that they were never even contacted by the NSA when they were datamining all the other telcoms. Guess they're either too small to bother with or the snoopers are too dumb to realize that Working Assets customers are mostly liberal dems. :)
Posted by: Michele at June 8, 2006 06:40 PMI have received a a few phone calls from the 866-463-3017 number. I have missed all the calls, and when I did a google search, It came up with this blog. What is up with this number? Who is calling?
Posted by: Suzette at June 9, 2006 03:27 PMI found your Blog by looking up the Phone Number 866-463-3017 that was called on my Cell, while I was visiting in Ohio last week. Im glad to find out who the call was from, thanks to you. I only turn my cell on when I am away from home or on the road, as I ONLY use it for Emergencies. I did not recognize that number and was very curious to find out who had tried to contact me. I have had my cell phone for about 5 years. I ALSO do not like SPRINT, but since I have a very inexpensive plan, that is no longer available, and is cheaper then any other one I can find, I put up with them. As I said I just carry my phone for emergencies, or for when I'm traveling away from home.
Posted by: Eureka at June 9, 2006 06:06 PMResponding to Michelle - I'd stay away from Working Assets if I were you. I used to work in the telecom biz, and I hate to tell you that they're connected with Sprint (they rent space on the network). In the likely event that you'll want to switch your number to another carrier after being with WA, it will be a living nightmare getting it switched, just as many of my customers came to realize. Just a heads up. :)
Posted by: noonespecial at June 10, 2006 04:23 PMThanks for the blog! This is the first time I have ever googled a missed number, boy and I glad I did! I am a Nextel customer currently tied down to a long contract.......wonder what they want with me???
Posted by: Cale at June 13, 2006 04:39 AMAlso googled that damn number, wondering who was hanging up on me. (Wonder that I never bothered to call it back.... until now.) Thanks.

Posted by: Angela at June 13, 2006 06:47 PMThanks for the posting of this information. I was planning on buying a new phone and renewing w/Sprint, just for simplicity's sake, but they have moved themselves to the back of the line.
Posted by: bill b at June 14, 2006 09:41 AMI'm generally satisified with Sprint's service and coverage. I generally do not give out my cell #, but much to my surprise i was receiving calls weekly from that 866 #. Pissed off, i called back and seems like they made it very easy to be removed from their list. It is very unfortunate that i had to do that at all. They should have exercised better judgement by not cold calling their customers. If i want to upgrade my service, i will call you; you do not call me!!!
Posted by: pcs customer at June 14, 2006 03:36 PMIt wasn't as easy for me to get off their list. I input my phone number three different times to be removed from their list, and I still got calls. It was only after I got a live person on the phone that the calls stopped (for now).
Posted by: Tom Hespos at June 14, 2006 04:11 PMThat number has called me a few times. Today was first time i answered it. It was some guy with an extremely bad accent. Assumed arabic but it kinda sounded french. Could barely understand him. He also sounded like he was in a garage or something with a party going on in the background. Either way, he asked for me and i told him he was unavailable and to leave a message. He started babling something about letting me go online internet on my phone without using my minutes. I told him i didnt have the internet. He told me he would activate it on my phone no charge. Then he babled something else and asked if he could call Tim (actually me) back tomorrow.
To me it sounds like a bunch of BS. First of all Nextel/Sprint does not give away a dam thing for free. If they could im sure they would charge you for NOT using your phone enough or some crap.
Second ive had Nextel call me before and it was much more formal than this guy. They gave me their ID numbers and such so i knew it was legit. They spoke perfect english. And it was always relatively quite in the background.
Free internet my ass. Ive seen scams like this before.
Posted by: Bigshot at June 15, 2006 09:21 PMI've been getting the same phone calls, and instead of calling the number, I called Sprint Customer Service. They didn't seem to know anything about it, but they did give me the number to corporate security. After being passed through a couple of people (with limited waiting) a nice lady told me that the phone number was a scam that Sprint was aware of, and that they were trying to have "taken care of." She also told me that under no circumstances was I to give the callers any information, and that she would do her best to have that number blocked from my phone.
The number for Sprint Corporate Security is 800 877 7330
Posted by: Cary at June 19, 2006 02:17 PMIt's certainly a scam. I dug into it a bit and found some juicy bits. Check out what I found here if you're curious.
Don't give any personal info out to this number or any number you don't recognize.
If you get a call from this clown, call the Sprint Corporate Security number Cary provided above.

Posted by: Wotak at June 20, 2006 01:50 AMThis number has called me at least 20 times in the past week! I never answer it b/c I figure if someone needs to reach me that badly, they can leave me a message. I just got a call from it again about five minutes ago, so I decided to google it and got this blog. Good to know! I am a Sprint customer and have never really had any problems with them in the past year or so, but it's really irritating to hear my phone ringing constantly just to see this number pop up! Now I will definitely never answer it...Sprint should really do something. Has our information been compromised somehow?
Posted by: Kelly at June 20, 2006 10:30 AMEveryone who gets these 866-463-3017 calls should immediately call SprintPCS Executive Services at 1-877-875-7505 to complain. Exec Services can supposedly take quicker and more effective action to rectify the situation than Sprint's so-called "Customer Care" department. (More like the "Customer I-Don't-Give-a-Rat's-Ass" dept.)
Sorry to say, but the Sprint Corporate Security number that Cary provided above is of no use. I called, but after being shuffled around interminably, I was finally told that they only deal with law enforcement personnel or with customers who want hard copies of phone records.
When you talk to Exec Services, make sure you describe the particularly annoying feature of these sales calls -- that the autodialer always hangs up on you. This marketing "strategy" is of no benefit to Sprint or to anyone else. Even if a customer wanted to hear the Sprint sales pitch (and the Exec Services lady assured me that there people out there who "appreciate" these unsolicited sales calls), he/she couldn't hear it.
Note to Sprint Marketing department: when you outsource your sales calls to super-duper-cheap offshore telemarketers, you get what you pay for.

I just got a call from 866-463-3017 too. This is probably the 6th or 7th call to which I ignored it once again. I decided to google it and found the information here.
What Junk! Wotak above says this is a scam. I called the 866-463-3017 and entered my number so I could be removed from their calling list. If this is a scam... what are they gaining by us entering our phone number? What is the scam?
Posted by: Jon at June 21, 2006 03:52 PMI've been getting these calls (from either 866-463-3017 or 800-614-9021) for the past 2-3 weeks, sometimes 3-4 per day. I've tried to add myself to the do-not-call list as one call explained how to do, but it's been two days and I'm still getting them. I just called Sprint Customer Service right now, and the representative couldn't tell me if the calls were legit (she said there were no notes on my account saying I'd been called) but offered to research the numbers and get back to me (I'm not holding my breath). I explained that I have limited daytime minutes and don't appreciate telemarketing calls on my cell phone, esp. while at work. If anyone else learns more, please post...
I don't have a contract either, and if this keeps up, won't be a Sprint customer much longer either (after almost 9 years as one). Hope they are savvy enough to read these blogs and realize when their customer base is really p****d.
Posted by: Susan at June 21, 2006 05:15 PMHi,
I just got off the phone with Sprint Executive Services and they have blocked my phone from Sprint marketing calls. I'm told that should resolve this issue. Otherwise, per their suggestion, save the phone number in your phone book and select "silent" for the personalized ring tone. At least that takes away some of the annoyance. Hope this is helpful.
Gina is correct!
Give Sprint's Executive Services a call at 1-877-875-7505. They took care of the problem right away by removing my number from Sprint's marketing list and blocking both 866 numbers ringing on my phone (866-463-3017 and 866-877-9830). I let the Sprint representative know my frustration and also made him aware that there are a lot of other individuals unhappy about Sprint's marketing tactics.
Posted by: Graham at June 23, 2006 01:43 PMI'm not sure this is really something from Sprint/Nextel.

I found your blog by Googling the # too after having missed their call. I left Sprint 5 days ago because their service sucks so bad. Seems like a common theme, 'eh?
Just remember - Sprint is an oxymoron.
After reading that attached blog, I'm not so sure Sprint is the capitalist slimball at work here.Of course, they probably send money to these bottom-dwellers (I'm mean that both literally and figuratively) and then sigh and shrug at our complaints. This is the first call I have ever received from sprint. My contract is up next month and I have already considered switching. Maybe it's not such a bad idea. I think Canada did it right with healthcare; let's nationalize cell phone service. That way the government won't have to datamine, they'll just pull up the records. I'm all for it but I guess I'm a republican too. Thanks a lot for this post. Perhaps not much help, but plenty fun to read. BTW the number that called me is 800-614-9021. I have a Texas number.
Posted by: Mark at July 6, 2006 10:55 PMI was suspicious enough to google this number - 800-614-9021- and I too got this blog. They are still up to it. I also received a text maessage about game downloads. I replied STOP as it instructed. Thanks for letting me know. I'll go into the Sprint store to save money on my Plan.
Posted by: Jan at July 7, 2006 04:31 PMHere's an update. I received another call over the weekend which I chose to answer (to get answers of my own). It seemed to be Sprint, identifying a 'service' call to Sprint that they were wanting me to rate. I figure no one but Sprint would be aware that I had made a call to their customer service.
The 'service' call I made was to cancel my Sprint service. I NEVER received a call asking me to rate their service with the many calls I made in the past. But after cancelation, I got this call.
Keeping in mind that anybody can get a hold of any information if they want it, I just politely told the person that they could go ahead and mark 'completely satisfied' down the entire list of questions and that was all the input I had, thanks and goodbye.
If your number is registered with www.donotcall.gov, you can file a complaint, as I just did. The 800-614-9021 number, or any number that I don't recognize, I just don't answer, for why should I even waste my minutes?
Posted by: Ellen at July 10, 2006 07:22 PMSprint only cares about the almighty dollar.
After having been customers with Sprint since 1999. I became unemployed due to my health and was unable to pay my bill. I called them several times to make arrangements to suspend my account and was told I could arrange to be on a Vacation plan for 6 months at a reduced rate.
They still cancelled my numbers and my account and charged me for disconnect fees on all my phones. They lied. They did not do anything to help me keep my account. Lip service is all I got. Save your energy trying to get any sympathy if you fall on hard times. No contracts cell phone service is the way to go and definately not with Sprint. Has anyone heard about the new services from Cricket?
re: Graham's advice
I got the 866-877-9830 call this afternoon.
I just called Sprint's Executive Services and the woman I spoke with said
1. Sprint won't take you off their marketing list if you're still a paying customer and
2. Sprint cannot block a number from your phone. You can use your caller ID to screen numbers and not pick up, but Sprint can't block numbers, no matter how much you're harrassed.
Did anyone else call Sprint and get the same or a different response?
Posted by: becca at July 20, 2006 01:47 PMI don't have a sprint cellphone but I thought this was funny. I had some Indian telemarketer call my office this morning trying to sell me something but I couldn't really understand. When I asked if he was trying to sell me something, he said no - but he was. I found out he was in Jerico, NY so I asked him if he knew how far it was from NY to Mississippi where I live. He got frustrated and got a supervisor on the phone. WhenI asked him the same question, he said that he "refused to answer the question". I was really having fun. Then he finally got mad and called me a "bloody shit person" and hung up. Great entertainment for free.

However, when I called back from my office phone I received "Sprint's Loyalty Office". I refused to give my phone number and asked what the call was in reference to. Would you believe he told me today was Sprint Customer Appreciation Day!. He also wanted to go over my plan and issue my a $100 service credit.
I told the guy I am happy with my plan and not interested in any credit.
Just as an FYI... my plan contract expired in Januar of this year.
Thanks for this blog.
Janice, if it really was sprint, what they were trying to do was issue you the $100 credit and acceptance of that would have meant another 2yr contract. They use the money as a way of getting another contract renewal. That's just shady. Most phone services do that sort of thing and just slip in that you are renewing a contract.

Posted by: Jeff at August 23, 2006 03:32 PMI just missed my first 866-877-9830 call last night. I can only guess it's about the fiasco of last week.
My wife and I have been with Sprint since 2002, and we have been off-contract for two years. My wife's phone died, and we found a replacment, so we decided to both upgrade our phones.
We contacted Sprint, and told them we found phones we liked, for free, on Amazon.com, but we'd get them through Sprint and even go back under contract, if we could get these phones for free, and free activation.
The Sales Rep at Sprint said "No Problem, just go back under contract, and I'll set up the rest!"
Well, we get under contract, and he transfers us to someone who can get us the phones, and they say there's nothing in our account about this deal!
We get a supervisor involved, and he accuses us of lying about it!
Long story short: They tried to bait and switch us, Sprint Reps AND Supervisors lied to our faces, we got out of our new contract, and we have switched to Verizon.
I had three 866-877-9830 calls in the past 24 hours. I didn't answer any of them but found this blog through Google. I called the SprintPCS Executive Services at 1-877-875-7505 to complain based on the recomendations here. After explaining why I was calling, after a short wait I was transfered to a person in corporate security. They were very courteous and concerned about the calls, blocked all the cell numbers on our account from being called by that number, and gave me a case number, a name, and a direct line to someone in Sprint customer security to call back if I continue to have any problems.

Posted by: matt at September 3, 2006 02:19 PMThe calls just won't stop from Sprint. I am on the line right now and it has been over 1 hour with Sprint trying to get them to stop harrassing me. Had to refer them to this specific website as the representative was not familiar with how to stop the calls. Not sure I won't be harrassed again. The 877 875 7505 is only open from 7 - 5 PM Central time. So far, it hasn't worked for me but I am still trying!
Posted by: joy at September 8, 2006 09:49 PMI received a call from the same number and found this site like so many others. I just want to make everyone out there aware that Sprint has figured out another way to scam its customers.
First, Sprint purportedly added services to my contract a couple months after I first signed up (really corrected it to match the service signed up for on the written contract at the store) and thus extended my contract by about five months. Five months, odd right? No, what is odd is that when I found this out when calling to terminate my service after the two years were up, I was told that I had requested this change. I told them I had not and showed them my contract, then I asked them to obtain the recording where I purportedly agreed to additional services and another extension. After tens of hours and multiple calls, I got the issue resolved- I thought. Then I called to cancel my services at the agreed upon date (a compromise date a couple months later) and was told that I couldn't cancel because I had agreed on June 14 to extend my contract for another TWO YEARS in exchange for a five percent discount. I told that that I had never made any such agreement. Customer service continued to tell me person after person that it was entered into the log for my account, so I must have agreed to it. Hmm. Let's see Sprint sales employee paid by number of people s/he gets to sign up for 2 year extension (in my case easily another $5,000 dollars for sprint over the time) is having trouble meeting the quota because alot of people who have been with Sprint for two years hate Sprint, and as a result, decides to stop asking the customer and insted just starts entering in the log that the customer has agreed. So, hours later, I established that I had made no such agreement and in fact had no idea what they were talking about.
Now two days ago I get my final bill and another "Confirmation of your recent account changes" letter (which I had recieved before as well). The letter has my contract going until 2008 and the bill has me charged $600.00 for early termination fees. Thanks to this blog, I am able to short cut to Executive Services and am told that I will be issued a credit.
Sorry about the length and that this is written so poorly, but I am still angry that Sprint continues to try to scam people like this. I am an attorney and it is difficult for me to get these issues resolved. Once it becomes a collection issue there is very little that you can effectively do to correct all these problems. So BEWARE of the scam and require Sprint to treat you legally and fairly.
Posted by: Held-at-gunpoint-by-Sprint at September 14, 2006 11:35 AMHas anyone received a call from 888-562-8952? I have taken and "missed" 5 calls from this number over the past two days. If I pick it up, there is a delay (I can hear noise in the background) and then a hangup about 5-10 seconds into the call. When I try to call 888-562-8952 back, I get some operator recording that I cannot understand.
By the way, I do have Sprint.
Does anyone have info on this number?
Thanks,

Sprint does suck, aloud and without embarassment, I had purchased my sprint phone, and it was supposed to work in my area, but it did't, and I attempted to cancel, and they said it was ok, for that moment anyhow.
Our call was dropped amidst thier shuffling us about thier system, after we were successfully cancelled, of course.... and later we recived a bill, requesting the balance of the account, with an added $300 for early contract termination. All this after they said that due to lack of service in our area, we would be released from our contract without penalty.
This little fiasco was finally ended 6 weeks later by our friends at the Better Business Bureau, who fought like mad to resolve our issue.
Don't invest in sprint, thier service sucks, and once they have you, they won't let you go without a fight...
my 2cents.

I have been calls from the 1-800 number, and when i finally called them back, it was sprints LOYALTY number. I didnt stick around since i knew what they wanted since our contract is up in less than a month. MY husband and i are still debating whether or not to resign. But i think once i show this and let him hear the numbers himself he might change his mind. I think with the different phone companies i have had, Verizon was the best when it came to cell phones. Service always came in better. And none of these random 1-800 or 1-866 numbers calling. Thanks for setting up this blog. :) very helpful
Posted by: heidi at September 27, 2006 12:36 PM I have multiple issues with Sprint (which I lovingly refer to as Satan on Earth). I get calls from several 800 numbers that go back to this loyalty center. And despite calling and eventually talking to a person all that happened was a different 800 number started calling.
But the one that really irks me is texting. I don't text. I call people that I want to talk to. But somehow I have become subscribed to two different services that charge $9.95 per month apiece. Apparently if you don't unsubscribe within their timeframe that is construed as acceptance. Once I did respond with unsubscribe I was informed that too much time had passed and they continue every month. I asked Sprint to shut off my texting. They did. But I continue to be charged every month. Sprint says that shutting off the service only prevents me from sending text messages. Anything that comes into the Sprint network addressed to me I have to pay for. Sprint claims that this is because the services originate outside of Sprint and that these companies bill Sprint and them Sprint bills me. Sprint claims to be unable to do anything about these subscriptions. So with the two subscriptions and the text messages I receive I end up with $25-30 in extra charges every month. My contract expires in just under two months. I am dropping Sprint with a resounding thud.
I am a sore loser. Legal or not I will find a way to get even.
The number is indeed a sales person wanting to extend the service. I told her 2 weeks ago to call me back in a month, and have received 2 more calls since then. Don't they listen? We have no intention of extending the service and are thinking of switching to Verizon.
Posted by: Nancy at October 6, 2006 10:17 AMHey guys, the latest with my experience with Sprint was: I called on Friday 13th (Oct.) to inform them of my address changes. I noticed later on that I was not receiving nor making phone calls. SPRINT HAD CHANGED MY NUMBER WITHOUT MY CONSENT. Called customer service and they kept stalling me to get my old number back. They assigned me a new number, but useless, all my clients have my old number. It took them four days to restore to my old number. Plainly and simply, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in Kansas City, where the HQ are located. In three days a representative was calling me. I had filed my complaint for a credit of $1,000 and that I didn't want to be bound by the contract anymore on both the phones on my account. What I got? $250 credit to my account and I am not bound by the contracts anymore. At least I got something and it seems to be the BBB works satisfactorily. Any, I mean ANY, complaints, just file a complaint online at the BBB website. And let me know, hehehe, I want see these big corporations on theis knees. And, just one more thing, be tough when negotiating, don't do as I did, do not settle for less than half what you asked, the ball is on their court to resolve the issue.
Posted by: Gabriel Tolentino at October 20, 2006 09:30 AMi just called the "loyalty" group (please!) after they called me from 1-800-614-9021 from a land line. i first dialed *67 so the call will appear as restricted then when one of the yahoo's on the other end answered, i asked in the most pithy voice "if they were interested in magazine subscriptions for their family and business". i did this about three times from a phone booth too. is this a solution? NO but it made me feel great. i hope you too feel better knowing i am highjacking them one minute at a time. loyalty group = assholes.
Posted by: o. Sano at October 24, 2006 02:54 PMThe national do not call list only works if they are calling from the U.S. See, when we allowed India to have all those telecommunication lines we also opened the door for these disturbing calls. A good tip is to log the number in your phone book, then set the ringer to silent, they may call, but atleast it will not ring.
